In any industry you will find different levels of quality. The moving
industry was deregulated (sadly) over 30 years ago, and since then there
have been many horror stories about movers. By choosing a mover who is
affiliated with a major vanlines company you will avoid many problems
associated with using independent movers. Some are good, but many are
unreliable or worse, unprofessional. They may offer slightly cheaper
rates, but to do that they cut back on important things like professional
help, truck maintenance, equipment, taxes, insurance, and service during
and after your move.
Pricing is only part of the story when you choose your mover. Just like
anything else, quality movers aren't expensive, they are priceless. That
said, pricing for different types of moves is calculated as follows:
Local Moves (household and/or office moves) within 200 miles of Toronto:
Local moves are basically charged by the hour. Rates are higher at the end
of the month, and at the beginning of the month, when movers are busiest,
just like an airline or a travel agency. Speak with your
consultant to determine the best rated dates before you choose your
moving date. Keep in mind that booking early will lock in the best rates. A fuel surcharge
is added to cover the cost of fuel and maintenance for the truck. GST
applies but not PST.
National moves (across Canada) and cross-border moving (between Canada and US)
:
Costs relating to this type of move are rated based on the weight and the
distance using a tariff. Your consultant will offer you the best price
possible without sacrificing quality of service. All your furniture will
be blanket-wrapped for protection when it is loaded in the truck. Small
shipments are consolidated on a large 53 ft tractor-trailer, driven by a
northAmerican vanlines driver, who delivers household shipments to various
points across Canada and the US. Speak with your consultant about the

International Moves:
Charges relating to your international move are calculated using the
volume and/or weight. You can choose to ship your things door to door, or
door to port, but the only recommended way is door to door service.
